Conversation & Cake #14

Conversation & Cake is a monthly meeting on Epiphany Island when I share what has been happening in our ministry and listen to views and ideas from members of our community. Here is the report from the 21st July meeting. Comments made by those present are given in italics:

The meeting began in some chaos as Celberon, as a cat, invaded Ana’s pond, shortly followed by Charlie. Ana felt as though she was being boarded.

Celberon may have swallowed too much water because his voice was broken up. As Ana explained: “he sou… li… thi…” As Celberon headed off to relog there were wishes of “the force – erm, voice –“  being with him and talk of Yoda and the dark side.

As usual I will report on various aspects of our ministry. Do feel free to add comments, ask questions and make suggestions as we go along.

We are now in our new financial year with a new basic monthly target for fund raising of L$53250. We raised L$65,372 in June which was 11.2% of our year’s target and obviously more than we needed to raise in a month. As Able was away we didn’t recalculate the monthly target for July but it can be adjusted for August. I saw that we had raised just 17% of our month’s needs earlier today, so donations are quite poor at the moment but hopefully they will pick up as the summer break in the northern hemisphere passes.

Celberon is continuing to lead the Sunday compline service. Around 6 people are attending, which is good.

Celberon thanked those who had supported him as he led compline.

Ana commented that she was glad people didn’t drown last week. Sunday prayers in the chapel, compline and Monday Morning Prayer were all held under water. This was because the sim was still flooded from our Sea Sunday celebrations. Able complained that he had water in the ear and couldn’t find the toilet. Charlie noted that Able wouldn’t have needed a toilet! Joyous reassured us that we only lost two or three to drowning in the flood. Celberon has a well-trained whale so he was ok.

We still need other worship leaders to provide cover for the compline services. If this is something you would like to do or if you know of someone who might be interested, do talk to any member of the Leadership Team. Continue reading

Conversation & Cake #11

Conversation & Cake is a monthly meeting on Epiphany Island when I share what has been happening in our ministry and listen to views and ideas from members of our community. Here is the report from the 7th April meeting. Comments made by those present are given in italics:

We had an excellent turn out to Conversation and Cake #11. Some could only stay for a short while but it was very encouraging to note the interest in our life as a community. Below is the report I gave, with comments and additions in italic.

As usual I will report on various aspects of our ministry. Do feel free to add comments, ask questions and make suggestions as we go along.

Beginning with finances, by the end of February we had raised 62% of our annual goal, so about 8% of our annual goal in the month which is very good for a month. However as other months had fallen below target that still left a lot to raise. At the end of March we had collected 75% of our annual goal of L$1068375. This has left us with L$263556 to collect in two months ready to pay our tier. Cady has divided that in two, for the two remaining months, giving us a target for April of L$131778, 4% of which had been raised by earlier today. Time is short but we can still achieve what we need to do.

Ana pointed out that we had 6% of our month’s target as we were meeting. Czari was sure we could hit the annual target. She also asked a question I was unable to answer: Does it give the Cathedral more with donating in world or PayPal? Ana thought that those in Europe get Value Added Tax added to the calculation. The PayPal account can be found by looking on the blog under Finances.

Last time we had suggestions about fundraising in order to achieve what we need. We need volunteers to arrange such events. Vaino has offered another social time at the pub with donations going to Anglicans of SL. A concert and contests have been suggested also. We have had the offer of an art exhibition and auction also. I have no details yet but will be following this up as I think that could be very good. The advantage that has is that we have no only the idea but the offer of running it. For the other items we still need a social team I think.

Czari has offered to teach some classes and have donations go to Epiphany. She is considering using the Community Center for this which would bring new people to Epiphany.

Yhishara wondered how the art auction would work. As far as I know various people will donate their work which can be purchased. It’s likely it would be displayed in the Cathedral courtyard. Yhishara is interested in contributing. It could be that other members of our community would also like to do so. Continue reading

Conversation and Cake #10

16895049Below is the report of Conversation and Cake #10. Conversation & Cake is a monthly meeting on Epiphany Island when I share what has been happening in our ministry and listen to views and ideas from members of our community. Here is the report  held on 24 February 2013. Text in italic was commentary made to my report.

As usual I will report on various aspects of our ministry. Do feel free to add comments, ask questions and make suggestions as we go along.

Beginning with finances, by the end of December we had raised 49% of our annual goal – L$531361 out of L$1068375. At the end of January we had raised 55%, L$590365. When I took a look earlier in the day we had raised 26% of the February target i.e. L$31740 out of L$119565. The date is 24th February which means we would anticipate having around 48% of our target already raised. We have a challenge ahead to raise what we need by the end of May but I’m sure we can do it. I did some calculations last time which showed that each of us would need to donate $80 US, 60 Euros or 50 Pounds over the year.

I was asked when the tier is due. It will need to be paid at the end of May, giving three months to raise the money we need. For those who were unsure of where to donate we explained that we have donations fonts and baskets around the sim, the easiest to find being just inside the main cathedral door. Alternatively Paypal can be used via the link on our blog. It was suggested we could try some fundraising push. A concert was suggested. This is something we have considered before but never managed. We have also had two club evenings hosted by Vaino. These were not for fundraising but could be run again with tips being given to the Cathedral. Czari suggested some kind of contest such as are run for RFL. Everyone was encouraged to think what might be done. A social team, as mentioned in previous C&Cs would possibly be able to do something like this. It was also suggested that we pray about the financial situation.

I had some feedback from Harper Ganesvoort who suggested we have a prayer rail in the Cathedral. She likes it very much. It seems that Barney agrees as I caught him standing on the kneeler of the rail and trying to light a candle the other day!

Charlie was content as long as Barney wasn’t raising his leg to put the candles out!

Although the idea of a community wall has not progressed a lot further, some thought has been given to it. It seems the best way forward would be to use a mesh design. Not everyone might have a viewer installed which can show mesh, though many will. It is possible to put signs around the sim so that anyone who sees them will be known to have a viewer that cannot see mesh. The sign will ask the person to contact me and I can make sure they are linked up with someone who can help them find a suitable viewer. Ana has done that for Charlie recently as his computer struggled with some viewers. You can see an example of the sign.

The sign which is only seen by those without mesh capability caused some consternation and didn’t seem to be working as it should. Some people will need to install new viewers to see mesh. This can be a problem with older machines.

There are likely to be further problems with viewers in the near future as LL moves to server side baking. This is something that is being discussed on the various forums about SL. We hope to be in a position to give good advice to our members as time goes on.

The mention of baking caused even more consternation! Kultainen wondered if it concerned making cakes, which led to Freezing’s mouth watering. As Cady pointed out, it’s to do with how an image is displayed in SL. This article will help you understand if you are not sure what is being talked about. http://modemworld.wordpress.com/2012/12/15/avatar-baking-and-the-clock-has-started/

No further work has been done on the blog but it will be changed eventually. As I said last time, we have no date for going live as yet. Continue reading
